The fact that oil and water don’t mix is common knowledge, but water and oil are both in nearly every lotion or cream. In a mixture, the two remain separate unless combined with an ingredient that keeps them bonded—an emulsifier. Skincare products on the market typically use synthetic emulsifiers, but natural emulsifiers are available for whipping up homemade lotions and potions.
Often they say to use two emulsifier but we have sourced an Olive derived emulsifier which can be used on its own and is suitable for even Vegan Products.
Give customers a reason to do business with you.
You would use a wax in balm products. That is for example Lip Balm, the wax will give a barrier to the skin allowing the oils to penetrate and work.
They are not emulsifiers, emulsifiers are used to help water and oil mix and stabilise.
Waxes with thicken and give a protective surface.
We have given you just two waxes to choose from:
Beeswax
Soya Wax - Cosmetic Grade (V)
When making recipes, the waxes are warmed with the oils and emulsifiers.
How to adjust existing beeswax recipes
To make vegan lip balms in lip balm cylinders, you can replace the beeswax with soya wax. As Soya Wax has a higher melting point than Beeswax, you need approximately 15% less Soya Wax in your recipe so, if you are using 20g of beeswax in your recipe, you only need to use 17g of Soya Wax, replacing the 3g difference with 3ml/g of vegetable oils.
