Organic Homemade Suncream

Sunscreen you buy from the shops has a few questionable ingredients you will want to avoid.  As usual, buying all-natural organic brands can be expensive, so making your own is the best option. Because this sunscreens active ingredient is zinc oxide, it is safe to use on babies under 6 months of age.

What is wrong with conventional suncream?

Sunscreen has become more and more popular over the years, and more and more people have a vitamin D deficiency.  Correlation?  I think so!  Many sunscreens block the body from absorbing vitamin D, and on top of that, they are loaded with chemicals.  The lack of vitamin D can be more dangerous than the actual sunburn. VITAMIN D IS VITAL FOR A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM AND OVERALL WELLNESS.  THE BEST SOURCE OF VITAMIN D IS THE SUN.  DID YOU KNOW THAT 40% OF ADULTS HAVE ARE DEFICIENT IN VITAMIN D?We are not saying you should go out in the Sun  with no protection but choose the time of day when the sun is not so strong.Getting 20 minutes of sunshine a day without sunscreen can help you to keep your vitamin D levels up. Here are some pointers on getting the sun you need without getting burnt:

  • Spend time outside in the morning and evenings when the sun is out but not as bright.
  • Go outside in intervals.  Start with 10 minutes at a time.
  • Avoid being in direct sun during the hottest hours of the days or when the sun is directly overhead.  During the summer months, this is between 12-3 pm.
  • During these hours, try sitting in the shade.
  • Wear hats and SPF shirts when going out into the sun for prolonged times.
  • Apply homemade sunscreen to exposed skin if you plan to be outside for a long period of time.

Directions

  1. Add the almond oil, cocoa butter, beeswax or soya wax, and coconut oil to a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make your own by placing a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.
  2. Once all the ingredients are melted, remove from the heat.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool, whisking it periodically.
  4. Add in the zinc oxide and essential oils.
  5. Whisk all the ingredients together.
  6. Pour into a storage container.
